miles and miles and miles and miles

Tonight, after some good sword-fighting and after Isaiah did his physical therapy exercises, he went into the kitchen to drink his "chug" and work through a pile of pills. I walked in to check on him and heard him saying, "miles and miles and miles and miles and miles..."

I asked, "What's miles and miles and miles...?"

He answered, "That's how long until you're done with leukemia. I used to get sick and then I'd get better in one day. But that was before I had to go to the hospital. Now I have appointments and sleepy tests and pills and sometimes I visit overnight. And you know why I hate that? Because I don't get to play."

I tried to turn his little lament toward the positive, "Ya, but you're doing so well. You're getting stronger."

"I know," he agreed. "But it takes miles and miles and miles..."

It has been a lot of miles and sometimes I just wish I could carry you, but then you would not be nearly as strong as you are now. I am proud of you. Keep chugging and those miles will keep passing. I love you sweet boy!

Miles and miles... and years ahead of other little ones your age with your wisdom and strength that God has given you. You give me strength just by reading your posts and you give me courage, because you are so much more courageous than I am. Many prayers are sent your way every day by me... Sending you some hugs too.

Tonight Dustin and I are awaiting news results from a procedure that his Dad is undergoing. We too understand the burden of the miles and miles. But thank you Isaiah for helping us to remember that in the midst of the long walk... our God's unfailing love prevails. I keep thinking of you and hoping that you're having happy days and feeling stronger each step of the way. We love you all!

I was hiking in the Desolation Wilderness near Tahoe a few years back and my friend told me we had to get to a mountain that looked really far away. I turned to him and said, "Wow! How can we walk that many miles in one day?" He said, "Just keep walking". It was a long, hard hike up and down hills. At first, I just thought about how hard the hike was, but then I started noticing the beautiful crystal clear lakes we passed and how blue the sky was. I smelled the fragrance of buttercups and blue lupine and marveled at the big, granite rocks near the trail. I just kept walking, even though I was tired, and you know what? It seemed like we got to that mountain in no time flat.

We're walking those miles with you too, Isaiah. Hugs to all.

Love, Michelle
